Book Review of: Your Bodies Many Cries for Water (2007) – Dr. Batmanghelidj

This book gives a fascinating insight into a subject that most people have heard a lot about but very few truly understand. Born in Iran in 1931, Dr Fereydoon Batmanghelidj studied medicine at St. Mary’s Hospital Medical School of London University. He then returned to Iran to set up medical centres and clinics for those in need. Caught up in the political turmoil of the overthrow of The Shah in 1979, when almost all professional and creative people were rounded up, Dr Batmanghelidj was incarcerated in Evin Prison in Tehran with thousands of others, in a prison designed for only 600 people.  Conditions were so harsh that prison cells designed for 6-8 prisoners would sometimes house up to 90 people, causing much stress and ill health. Not long after his arrival he noticed a man with severe stomach pain due to a peptic ulcer.  Without any medical aids or medicines to hand he felt totally unable to help him so could only advise drinking 2 glasses of water. Within minutes the man was pain free and  Dr. Batmanghelidj realised he had to investigate this effect further. He realised that the most common ailment resulting from the stressful prison conditions was painful stomach ulcers. One prison inmate had taken all of his stomach medicine and was almost semiconscious with excruciating pain until Dr. Batmanghelidj again recommended water consumption, which completely alleviated the pain within 20 minutes. Dr. Batmanghelidj spent the next 3 years of his prison sentence “treating” all sorts of ailments with water, with amazing results. On his release in 1982 he escaped to America where he set up the Foundation for the Simple in Medicine to explore his discovery that dehydration is the true cause of many illnesses, something that his medical training had totally overlooked. This book catalogues and explains the bodily processes that use water and the effects that even mild dehydration has on bodily systems. This updated edition includes many testimonials from readers and medical specialists who have used water to aid recovery from a wide range of illnesses. Dr. Batmanghelidj shows us in this book how far medicine has journeyed from its true naturopathic roots and how the most basic of human needs has been largely ignored to the detriment of many people’s well being. A truly enlightening read.
